JOB SUMMARY. As a member of the Supportive Living NW team, the Behavioral Direct Support Professional Staff (BDSP) employee has an overall responsibility of maintaining a close working relationship with the Quality Assurance team. The BDSP supports the assigned client(s) in following the Support Plans (PCSP, IISP, PBSP) by assisting, encouraging, supporting, and facilitating clients in their activities. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.  

  • Behavioral Support: Provide positive behavior support to clients under extreme conditions and provide necessary interventions to deescalate behaviors and crisis intervention.  

  • Assistance Tools: Assist clients communicating to Sound Health and with their counselors. Assist and encourage the client to contact when an issue arises. 

  • Shopping: Assist clients in shopping for groceries and household supplies, ensuring they have the necessary items to meet their needs. 

  • Transportation: Provide transportation to clients for various purposes, such as medical appointments, job interviews, or social outings via driving clients. Schedule and coordinate use of public transportation services like Access as per PCSP. 

  • Working on goals: Collaborate with clients to work on their individual goals as outlined in the IISP, encouraging and supporting their progress. 

  • Reporting: Ensure all incidents involving clients are immediately reported to the appropriate Quality Assurance Manager. During On Call hours, immediately report incidents to the designated-On Call person.  

  • Assisting with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s): Support clients with various activities of daily living, including but not limited to personal care, housekeeping, and meal prep. 

  • Medication Management: Assist with medication management, ensuring clients take their prescribed medications as directed and maintain accurate medication records. 

  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of client activities, progress, incidents, medication records and relevant information. Document in designated system. 

  • Advocacy: Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure they receive appropriate services and support as needed, identify problems with living conditions and report to client management team. 

 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES.  
 

  • Maintain Right Response Certification, including both elements and advanced curriculum 

  • Be knowledgeable of client individual support plan (IISP) goals and take steps necessary to see that client’s goals are documented and achieved.  

  • Provide all services as trained and directed by the IISP, be able to operate Hoyer Lift and other equipment as necessary and trained. 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of requirements for the completeness, thoroughness, and accuracy of logbooks and activity documentation. Collect data and complete daily documentation of client activities and log hours. 

  • Monitoring and documentation of medications, in accordance with Supportive Living NW Policies and Procedures. 

  • Respond immediately all emergencies as directed in Supportive Living NW Policies and Procedures. 

  • Be an effective communicator, both verbally and in writing.  

  • Effectively work as part of the Supportive Living NW ISS Team and maintain professional relationships with co-workers and office staff. 

  • Able to document in electronic document systems. 

  • Ability to drive clients to appointments with access to own vehicle. 

  • Required training 

  • Right Response: Day 1& 2 

  • Sensory Needs for Adult with Autism (DDA, 3 hours) 

  • Socialization: Living and Working Environments for Adults with Autism (DDA) 

  • On-going Additional Training (included in 12 required CEs) must include: 

  • Right Response Day 2 and 2 hours of specialized training on a topic relevant to the individual they support, to be completed each calendar year, such as: 

  • PBSP review/re-training and quiz 

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders 

  • Nonverbal Communication 

  • Dual Diagnosis 

  • Trauma 

 

QUALIFICATIONS. A demonstrated ability to work with developmentally disabled adults and one (1) year of related experience or education. In addition, the following minimum requirements must be met, in accordance with WAC 275-26-060: 

 

  1. Have a background inquiry clearance by the authorized state agency. 

  1. Exhibit mature behavior and the ability to make independent judgments. 

  1. Demonstrate the capacity to be an appropriate role model to clients and coworkers. 

  1. Speak and write English effectively to communicate with clients and staff. 

  1. Be eighteen years of age or older. 

  1. Treat a client with dignity and consideration, always respecting the client’s civil and human rights. 

  1. Have appropriate auto insurance. 

 

EDUCATIONS AND EXPERIENCE. 

High school diploma or equivalent. 

Valid Driver’s License 

CPR and First Aid – current or ability to obtain/renew. 

NA-C, NA-R, or HCA. 

 

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS. The Behavioral Direct Support Professional position will typically experience frequent sitting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Occasional lifting of 50 lbs. Occasional bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, standing, crawling, reaching, walking, driving, traveling, kneeling, and crouching.  

 

Work Environment- Typically, indoors, but may accompany client on outings. Sound level – moderate. Temperature – moderate.
